Pet Owners
Recent research shows that one of the main sources of pathogens in urban
waterways is waste droppings from dogs, cats and birds. Canine diseases are
often shed in feces. Therefore defecation that is not properly disposed of may
be a health hazard to people and other pets. Animal waste that is not picked up
may be carried to storm sewer systems by water run off and may result in water
pollution.

Responsible Dog Owners:
- Take a bag with you on walks to pick up after your pet
- Immediately pick up defecation on any property
- Dispose of defecation responsibly
- Place defecation in garbage bag and place bag on curbside for collection
on collection day or
- Flush defecation down toilet
- Never place defecation in green cart, storm drain or body of water
When washing your pet:
- If possible, bathe your pet indoors using less toxic shampoos or have
your pet professionally groomed
- If you bathe your pet outdoors, do so on the lawn or another permeable
surface to prevent wash water from entering the storm drain. Soaps and
shampoos can be harmful to marine life
- If you use a shampoo for flea control, be sure to dispose of unused
product at a hazardous waste collection centre
